In the early part of his career, many proclaimed Alagna as the “4th Tenor,” claiming that he is the air apparent to Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and José Carerras.
Roberto’s parents are actually of Italian decent (from Sicily) and had immigrated to France. He describes his family as "a typical Southern European artistic family consisting of generations of acrobats, mandolin players and singers." (http://www.jcarreras.homestead.com)
Mr. Alagna is married to soprano Angela Gheorghiu, with whom he often is seen or heard performing.
Alagna started singing as a cabaret singer for tips in Paris.
Won first prize in Luciano Pavarotti Competition in 1988, made professional debut as Alfredo in La Traviata with the Glyndebourne Opera touring company.
Covent Garden and Metropolitan Opera debut as Rodolfo in La bohème in 1992.
Roberto Alagna opened the 2006-07 season at La Scala in the new production director Franco Zeffirelli’s new production of Aida. During the second performance (Dec. 10, 2006), Alagna, was booed and whistled at by a group from the audience, resulting his walking off the stage, mid-performance. Mr. Alagna’s reaction was seen as completely unprofessional.
